Display-Märkte im Umbruch. Neuorientierungen für Umweltschutzstrategien

development - both as a strategy for the ICT sector and practically in single ICT enterprises? Guided by this question a dialogue process among representatives from business, policy and science has been started in summer 2001. Under the term NIK ("Nachhaltigkeit in der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik" - Sustainabil- ity in the Information and Communication Technologies) the Federal Government initiated a project via the Federal Ministry of Education and Science, to develop a roadmap for a sustainable information and communication society. The results were presented in an expert forum, held in November 2003 in Berlin. Main elements of the dialogue were focal groups, whose key tasks existed in the formulation of goals as well as in the development of and agreement on suggestions to implement lead visions. In addition to the focal subjects Mobile Telecommunication and Public Procurement the initiative focussed on Displays.

To steer the display sector into a more sustainable direction the following innovation ar- eas were identified and promoted:

Creation of the prerequisites for glass-to-glass recycling of cathodic ray tubes on an industrial scale,
Proactive development of recycling processes for flat panel displays,
Development and production of new flat panel diplay technologies,
Development of sustainable product use systems for electronic paper.
