Sustainability at IZT in 2016

Since 2013 the IZT has presented its economic and social sustainability efforts in an annual report.

Ecology

Total Energy Consumption

The final energy consumption of the IZT increased in 2016 in comparison to the two previous years, both in the amount of heating gas used as well as electricity consumption. A likely cause for this development is a larger amount of research assistants at the IZT. Since 2016 a team has been working on methods to further optimize the technical and organizational aspects of heating at the IZT.

Business travel

The total kilometers travelled by the IZT has barely changed in 2016 when compared to previous years, however, as in 2015, trains were used less frequently as fewer travel intensive national projects were worked on by the IZT.

Simultaneously, air travel increased as multiple project activities required flights within Europe.

CO2 Emissions

With increased heating gas and electricity usage as well as a growing amount of air travel, the CO2 emissions of the IZT in 2016 have also risen as expected. Some ways this could be decreased are to make the heating systems more efficient and to reduce air travel. These methods are currently being discussed at the IZT.

Social issues

The amount of women in the IZT workforce in 2016 lay slightly over 50 percent. This was the first year in which more women than men were employed at the IZT. To accommodate yearly fluctuations, regarding a larger timeframe is helpful. Thus, looking at average values from the last three years, it becomes clear that between 2014 and 2016 the IZT employed the same percentage of women as men. With this, we have achieved our goal of providing equal employment opportunities for both genders at the IZT. 

The proportion of women in leading positions at the IZT has increased in 2016 to slightly above 40 percent. When exclusively considering research directors (the second level of management, introduced in 2014), this rises to 50 percent.
