Sustainability at IZT in 2015
Since 2013 the IZT has presented its economic and social sustainability efforts in an annual report.
Ecology
Total Energy Consumption

(Yellow) per Employee; (Grey) Total
The energy consumption of the IZT rose in comparison to the noticeably low value in the previous year. Considering a mild winter in this timeframe, increased heating requirements seem an implausible cause for this. Animated by the values of 2015, new ways to encourage the workforce to adopt more sustainable heating behaviour and taking appropriate measures to support this are being discussed (regular indication of heating and airing behaviours, the installation of thermometers, raising the number of programmable thermostats).
Business trips

The kilometers travelled per employee have marginally increased after a very low value for 2014. When considering the separate modes of transport, it becomes clear that air travel in 2015 considerably increased, while travel by rail became less frequent in the same timeframe. This short term rise in air travel can be partially linked to certain customer acquirements and project requirements. It has become clear that more sustainable modes of travel such as rail are not an acceptable alternative to trans-European flights, mostly due to the significantly longer travel time. Instead, we should pursue whether business trips can be avoided by utilizing modern methods of communication such as video conferences. Despite the short-term increase in 2015, a medium term decrease in the amount of km travelled with business trips since 2011 is still clearly recognizable.
CO2 Emissions

(Orange) Gas; (Green) Train; (Light blue) Car; (Grey) Airplane; (Yellow) per Employee; (Light grey) Total
The most important indicator in the area of ecology are CO2 emissions, and in 2015 they are considerably higher than they were in the previous year. The main reason for this is that emissions caused by air travel almost doubled (from 7 to 13 tons). In contrast, emissions through more environmentally friendly train travel decreased (from 5.1 to 3.5 tons). As more gas was used in 2015, more CO2 was emitted in this area (from 14.1 to 17.1 tons). The causes of these developments, and potential solutions to them, were discussed in previous sections.
Social issues
The proportion of women at the IZT has experienced a general upward trend since 2012, which has continued in 2015, finally reaching a female representation of 50 percent. The amount of women in leading positions (management and research directors) has remained the same. When considering only research directors, the percentage of women remains at 50, as it did in the previous year.
