Biomass as renewable energy source is a major driver of a decentralized energy supply in peripheral regions. Just recently biomass has been promoted in various Germans regions through the increasing number of so called 'bioenergy villages'. The main aim of these villages is the transfer of municipal energy supplies from a non-renewable to a renewable based energy system - with a primarily focus on biomass. Thus, particularly in peripheral regions with a low density of industry and commerce, the mobilization of existing biomass potentials can contribute to an alternative form of energy production. Furthermore it provides a positive added value for rurally defined regions.
The aim of the research project is to identify spatial as well as technical opportunities for an improved mobilization of biomass potentials in peripheral regions. This applies for biomass as main energy source and as part of a decentralized energy supply - having the focus on services of general interest and security of supply.
In the beginning of the project, the methodological approach concentrates on the identification and an in-depth analysis of three reference regions. The regions will be identified according to their spatial, demographic as well as economic structure. Additionally to this analysis various bioenergy facilities will be characterized from a spatial and technical perspective. This characterization will be undertaken also for other renewable energy sources such as wind, solar heat, photovoltaics, hydro and geothermal power as well as biogas.
In a next step, bioenergy scenarios as well as scenarios for other renewable energy sources will be developed. The scenarios will be the basis for the classification of various other regions with similar conditions for promoting the mobilization of biomass potentials.
At the end of the research project a set of recommendations will be elaborated, which will address both political decision-makers and planners. Primarily they include planning as well as technical and economic aspects. Furthermore they address the relevant legal-administrative regulation framework as well as provide information on existing uncertainties by transferring the project outcomes.
The major part of the IZT comprises the analysis of spatial, demographic and economic aspects in terms of addressing biomass potentials in peripheral regions.
