The future of global motorcycle markets 2030: environmental analysis and scenario development

Global mobility markets are subject to profound changes that also impact the motorcycle market. During this project, various future scenarios of global motorcycle markets were developed by the IZT with ScMI Scenario Management International. Digitalization is one of the most influential trends, as are changing demands for environmental protection and safety. Among the new design options are weather and curve control systems as well as networked communication with other drivers. Political demands for emission reductions for all modes of transportation could lead to the electrification of motorcycles. BMW Motorrad, the project’s commissioner, was and remains the only major manufacturer of motorcycles with high-capacity engines in Germany.

Overview

The future of global motorcycle markets 2030: environmental analysis and scenario development

Global mobility markets are subject to profound change, which also influences the motorcycle mar-ket. Several developments exercise a joint influence: for example changes of mobility needs or of general necessities of life, electrification of engine systems up to automating cars and autonomous driving, including vehicles in (IT-) systems of information technology or the growth of emerging and developing countries.

Considering the high degree of differentiation of global motorbike markets, its complexity and the uncertainty, it is impossible to provide an exact prognosis of future developments. Therefore, sce-narios will be developed and evaluated in a joint project between ScMI, Scenario Management International AG, Paderborn, and the IZT, Institute for futures studies and technology assessment, Berlin.
