Future infectious disease threats to the European Union: Identification and assessment of different infectious disease scenarios that could be of potential danger to the public at large.
2009
European Center for Disease Prevention and Control

Overview

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established by the European Parliament to identify, assess and communicate
current and emerging threats to human health from communicable diseases.

In order to inform key stakeholders and guide future planning on the key
threats from communicable diseases facing the European Union, the ECDC
issued a tender for consulting services which was won by IZT, the Institute
for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment.

The key purposes of this project are to:

  • identify plausible scenarios of infectious disease threats facing the EU in the year 2020;
  • comprehensively identify and analyze emerging vulnerabilities, opportunities and strengths relating to these scenarios;
  • include relevant stakeholder groups in the scenario process;
  • integrate expert and practitioner knowledge in order to validate and refine the scenarios.
