At the latest since the Federal Government adopted the national sustainability strategy in 2002, the guiding principle of sustainable development has been firmly anchored in German politics. Nevertheless, the successes have fallen far short of the requirements. It is therefore important to strategically develop the guiding principle further. The research project "Sustainability 2.0" initiated by the Federal Environment Agency was intended to contribute to this. The scientists carefully analysed previous experiences with the guiding principle in the German context, its strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, they examined current discourses to see to what extent they provide ideas for a "sustainability model 2.0". On the basis of this analysis and with the involvement of relevant expertise from external experts, recommendations were developed on how the guiding principle can be modernised and thus renewed and strengthened in its connectivity and effectiveness.
