In addition to the state of research on the form and distribution of discrimination also their Public perceptions were taken into view. Potential protection gaps and the need for action to overcome them have been taken into account. A special focus thereby was an intersectional perspective which considered also discriminations by other categories of difference such as ethnicity, sexual orientation and identity or age related.

Methodically, the research started with an analysis of the German speaking research literature, but also of the publications of civil society organizations, which lately amplified pointed out on possible discrimination of boys and men. In a further step the analyzed results of the literature review were validated by expert interviews and ultimately compiled as a usable handout for the advice work of the German Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency.
