Sustainable Vegetation Management for Railways

The European railways have been looking for alternatives to herbicides such as the controversial glyphosate in order to keep the track area free of plant growth. In 2017 the International Union of Railways (UIC) commissioned the IZT to propose more environmentally friendly methods (HERBIE Project). In the follow-up project TRISTRAM (2019-2020), the best alternatives and recommendations for action from the predecessor project will be further tested in the field and optimized for the European railways. This shortlist includes organic acids such as pelargonic acid and the electro-weeding method from organic agriculture, in which electric fields kill unwanted vegetation. Hot water or steam jets, which are intended to serve the same purpose, are also being tested.
