Neue IuK-Technologien und ihre Relevanz für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit touristischer Destinationen. Trends, Daten und Fakten im internationalen Vergleich
The aim of the research project ‘Benchmarking Information and Communication Applications for the purpose of Marketing and Sales in the Tourist Sector - taking as example the German federal states and comparable European Regions’ was to develop the branch and regional specific basics for the strategic Benchmarking of public services in tourism as well as a ‘Benchmarking of the Regions’.
The focus of the project was to ascertain key data and to learn of best practices. The research assignment also examined the value of publicly accessible sources, especially statistical data, concerning their support of public services. Furthermore a method was developed to continuously evaluate marketing and sales of regional tourist services; this was exemplified by the official Internet presentations of the regions of the European Union.
The study focussed on three main topics. Firstly, a typology of the regions of the European Union was developed: The indicators used were capacity and occupancy of tourist businesses. Data about the use of IC Technologies in the European Regions supplement the database. Secondly, more than 160 Internet presentations of Regional Destination Management Organisations were thoroughly analysed. Thirdly, the use of Information and Communication Technologies as well as experiences with these technologies in publicly supported Destination Management Organisations was collected by written questionnaire and evaluated.
The research project was conducted in cooperation with the IZT - Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment, Berlin, the German Tourism Association (DTV) and the Berlin office of the German Economic Institute for Tourism Research (dwif). During the first project year the functions of the ‘DTV’ and the ‘dwif’ were administered by the ‘German Information and Reservation Society’ (DIRG). The project was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research under the project title ‘New Information and Communication Technologies and their Relevance for the Competitiveness of Tourist Destinations - Trends, Data and Facts in International Comparison’ (project-no. 01 HG 99 05).
