IZT assessed the sustainability performance of railway stations for the international association of railway companies UIC. The list of "best practices" is headed by the main station in Utrecht, the Netherlands. It scores not only with ecological factors such as the energy concept with solar cells or the 22,500 bicycle parking spaces. This station has also been upgraded with numerous services that provide more public traffic and jobs. For example, the new town hall was built directly on the station site. The IZT project developed guidelines and recommendations for action so that railway operators can significantly improve the sustainability performance of their stations.
