Genetic testing, climate engineering, 3D printers - scientific and technological development is accelerating. In order to be able to shape policy effectively, it is necessary to observe and analyse this development in advance, including its consequences. The Bundestag has created a special scientific advisory institution for this purpose: the Office of Technology Assessment (TAB). The TAB is operated by the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). KIT has been cooperating with IZT and selected other research institutions since September 2013. Studies prepared by the IZT for the Bundestag focus on digitalisation topics and dialogue formats.

Since September 2013, the IZT has been part of the consortium responsible for the Office of Technology Assessment at the Bundestag. With its expertise in futurology, dialogue processes and discourse analyses, the IZT is to help identify the parliament's options for action with regard to societal conflicts and potentials even earlier in the coming five-year period.

One innovation envisaged is a "Stakeholder Panel on Technology Assessment", a continuous future forum with quantitative and qualitative instruments that organise the exchange between the public and experts.

The Office of Technology Assessment is an independent scientific institution that advises the German Bundestag on issues of scientific and technological change. The TAB is operated by the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Since September 2013, KIT has worked here with the IZT and two other new consortium partners. Since 2018, KIT has been cooperating here with IZT and VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH (VDI/VDE-IT).
