5G mobile networks are taking shape and will soon be available to all. In 2020, the commercial roll-out of this new technology will begin. This will enable high-speed connectivity from anywhere, connect a large number of small sensors, control production lines in large factories, support autonomous driving and enable e-health applications, to name just a few application areas.

Digital technologies have been identified by the EU as key to achieving some fundamental societal and economic challenges, such as improving quality of life, sustainable development and economic growth. The development of 5G solutions for industrial applications in Europe requires the implementation of 5G trials that meet the needs of specific industries. Some of these industries, also referred to as "verticals" to the information and communication technology (ICT) industry, will benefit significantly from the use of 5G technologies.

The 5G-VICTORI project addresses some of these industries and is involved in building future-proof infrastructures that enable the simultaneous execution of industrial application scenarios. The field tests are mainly carried out in the areas of transport, energy, media and in so-called future factories. The 25 project partners include industrial companies, research institutes and universities from eight European countries. The IHP - Leibniz Institute for Innovative Microelectronics in Frankfurt/Oder is coordinating the project. 5G-VICTORI is funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme with around 13.5 million euros.

IZT is participating in the Berlin test field and intends to develop a use case for a digital platform that integrates and seamlessly networks old and new modes of transport ("Mobility as a Service"). Furthermore, IZT is responsible for an integrated assessment of all 5G use cases in the field trials ("Technology Assessment" and "Sustainability Assessment").

5G-VICTORI is part of the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP), the joint initiative of the European information and communications industry. The aim of this organisation is to define the requirements for the next generation of communication networks and services. In this phase of 5G development, the 5G PPP projects are to conduct extensive field trials to test and verify the performance of 5G technologies in operational environments.
